An exhausting and suspenseful final round for Henley

By the time the day was over, Russell Henley was no doubt happy.

Just to get it over with and move on.

On a weekend of high scores, Henley didn’t play all that well and finished tied for 27th at the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio.

His final round of 75 – worst since a 77 in Augusta, but only second round of 75 or worse this year - covered a spectrum, from a double bogey on No. 6 to two inches from a hole in one on 12, from a bogey and double bogey on the front nine to only the second time during the weekend he had consecutive birdies.

He promptly double bogeyed No. 13, and dropped 10 spots into a tie for 29th.

At that point, through 13 on Sunday, Henley had 12 bogeys and only 12 birdies.

By that point, a little after 2 p.m., only 14 players were under par, and almost half of the 52 who made the cut were at 4 over or worse. Cameron Young, a top-50 player, took a 13-over weekend into the clubhouse.

The cut line was 4 over.

Henley was just short on a birdie putt on 14, but settled into a groove of four straight pars only to hit two roughs on 18 and bogey that hole for the third time to finish 5 over for the tournament.

It was a rough weekend for some top-50 players: Cameron Young (42/35 rankings) was 13 over, Tom Hoge (26/20) 10 over, Keegan Bradley (33/2) 9 over, Shane Lowry (11/10) 12 over, and Brian Harman (22/18), Justin Thomas (17/14), Jason Day (16/13), and Taylor Pendrith (36/30) 6 over each.

Of the 52 players making the cut, only 10 shot even or better on Sunday. Lowry racked up a 13-over in the final round alone. Winner Scottie Scheffler turned in a final-round 74.

Up next for Henley is the U.S. Open this week at Pinehurst, N.C. He tied for 14th last year after missing the 2022 cut.
