Class 6A
Pope 7, Houston County 4; Pope 1, Houston County 0
Houston County was in a very rare situation: never leading, for a game, let alone a doubleheader. Pope led 3-0 after two and 5-1 after four in the opener. Just as rare: The Bears went down in order in consecutive innings. And then they got a leadoff double in the fourth, but managed only one run and hit into an inning-ending double play. Eli Stephens had 3 hits and Kendall Jackson 2 for the Bears. Another rarity emerged in the nightcap, Houston County being held to one hit, and committing 4 errors. Pope, which had only 2 hits, scored in the third on a sacrifice and 2 errors. Carson Small went the distance for Houston County, fanning 2 with a walk, throwing 52 strikes on 77 pitches in the third time Houston County had been shutout this season. The senior class departs with a 126-28 record, 2 state titles as well as a Final Four and Elite Eight.
Class AAA
Calvary Day 2, Mary Persons 0, Game 3
The Bulldogs suffered only their second shutout of the season. A Snow and Z Grizzard teamed for a 5-hitter for Mary Persons, held to just 2 hits and 2 walks. Calvary Day pushed across 1 in the fourth and 1 in the sixth, to end Mary Persons’ season at 24-14.
Class A/Division I
Prince Avenue 10, Crawford County 0, 5 inn., Game 3
Time and circumstance caught up with Crawford County, to end a magical season for the 27-10 Eagles. The 10-man team overcame a resounding defeat in the first game to even the series, but the defending state champs at home were too much in the series finale. Prince Avenue scored twice in the first, and then took control with 3 in the third and fourth. The Eagles got runners on with less than two outs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, but couldn’t push anybody across. The Wolverines had 9 hints and took advantage of 7 walks.
GIAA, semifinals
FPD 6, Tattnall 5, Game 3
The Trojans led 5-2 after batting in tht etop of the fourth. They trailed 6-5 when the top of the fifth came around, the Vikings (24-6-1) scoring 4 in the fourth, on an error, single, 2 errors, a sacrifice, another error, and Connor Strandmark’s two-out two-run single. Strandmark survived two errors of his own doing on the mound in the top of the inning that led to a run. Tattnall (21-11) stranded runners in each inning the rest of the way, doomed in the seventh after a leadoff single with a runner caught stealing, then a strikeout and fly out. Tattnall outhit FPD 10-6 and had 4 errors leading to 4 unearned runs. Strandmark had 2 hits and 2 RBI, with 2 RBI from Gavin Spillers and Reynolds Handberry. Riley McCallum had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Tattnall. Anson Talcott and Kade Thompson added 2 hits each.
John Milledge 10, Valwood 3; Valwood 1, John Milledge 0
The upstart Trojans rolled in the opener, boosted by a 5-run fourth and helped by 5 Valwood errors and 3 unearned runs. Cooper Young had 3 hits, John Milledge getting 2-hit games from Cooper Wilburn, Blake Bellflower, David Todd, Grayson Paradise, and Bryce McDonel, Bellflower with 3 RBI. Paradise whiffed 6 with 3 walks in 6.2 innings. But they couldn’t keep the offense going in the deciding game, outhit 6-3 and giving up the lone run in the fifth.
Edmund Burke 2, Piedmont 1; Edmund Burke 10, Piedmont 5

Late struggles put Henley over par
If Russell Henley took some extra aspirin on Saturday, it’s understandable.
He got off to an pleasantly uneventful start at the Wells Fargo Championship with five straight pars. Then the eventfulness began: bogey, birdie, birdie, bogey.
A double bogey on 16 and bogey on 18 sandwiched a birdie on 17, and he finished 2 over for the day and is 1 over for the tournament, tied for 29th.
