Mercer Tennis Classic alums go deep at Wimbledon

Half of the women’s singles quarterfinalists at Wimbledon know their way around Macon and Mercer a little bit.

They played in the Mercer Tennis Classic.

Alja Tomljanovic is a little more familiar. Her sister Hana, a former player at Virginia, was a Mercer assistant for two years. Alja played in the MTC twice, losing in the finals in 2013 and quarters in 2017.

She outlasted Alize Cornet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round, and now faces 17th-seed Elena Rybakina at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Tatjana Maria is in the semifinals, having knocked off German countrywoman Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. She now faces third seed Ons Jabeur, who eliminated Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Maria played in Macon in 2021, and it was a short stay, thanks to just having a baby, with a first-round loss. Maria and Jabeur play Friday at midnight.

Bouzkova had a better trip to town, losing in the semifinals in 2018.

Amanda Anismova of the United States, from New Jersey, has reached a semifinal after handling Harmony Tan 6-2, 6-3. Anismova was an up-and-coming teenager in her first-round loss in 2017 in Macon.

The 20th seed gets Simona Halep at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
