Henley goes backward
Chasing Tiger Woods isn’t necessarily a good thing like it used to be, and Russell Henley was almost doing it again at the PGA Championship.
Henley lost the momentum of a good Saturday round and lost 24 spots on the board with a 6-over 76 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 60th.
He avoided joining 11 players at 10 over or worse for the tournament, but was one of 10 who were 5 over or worse on Sunday.
Henley’s day started with a double bogey and didn’t get any better, with a bogey to follow, and then three straight after a birdie, all within his first eight holes. The back nine had only two bogeys to one birdie.
The 9-over tournament is Henley’s worst since a year ago when he had back to back 9-overs in the Wells Fargo and PGA Championship tournaments. After finishing below par in nine of the first 10 tournaments, Henley is 20 shots over in his last five tournaments, including the lone missed cut of the season, at RBC Heritage.
Henley isn’t in the field for this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.
