Macon is on a roll, wins third straight
The Bacon got control early and kept it en route to a 5-2 win over Gastonia in Coastal Plain League action at Luther Williams Field.
Macon had a 5-0 lead after two, and gave up single runs in the sixth and eighth as pitchers James Williams, Holden Nix, and Patrick Orlando teamed for a five-hitter, nine strikeouts and only three walks.
Riley King and CJ Bush had two hits each, King driving in a pair of runs and Connor Corbitt (Stratford) belting a homer.
Macon got two in the first, on a King RBI single scoring Zach Weisz and a fly from Alex Crotty to bring in King.
The Bacon added three in the second, starting with Corbitt’s leadoff homer. Bush doubled and scored on an error, and J Richards walked and eventually came in on King’s single.
Macon followed a four-game losing streak with the current three-game winning streak, the longest of the season.
Then again, Macon visits Savannah at noon on Wednesday, and Savannah has a 6-1 record against Macon.
Mercer women add a UGA Landers to staff
The son of Hall of Fame wmoen’s basketball coach Andy Landers of Georgia is now a Mercer Bear.
Mercer head women’s basketball coach Susie Gardner has hired the son of her college head coach to be the Bears’ director of player personnel.
Landers, a Mississippi grad, got started at UGA as a men’s and women’s team intern in 2014-15, then worked with the Orange Bowl Ambassador Program for a year
He spent 2016-17 as the video coordinator for the Virginia women’s program. The Cavaliers went 20-13 that season.
Landers then returned to his alma mater as director of basketball operations for the women, who finished 12-19 and underwent a coaching change.
Clutch playoff goaltender returning to the Mayhem
The first player signed by the Macon Mayhem for next season is a big one.
Jordan Ruby, who was the MVP of the 2016-17 SPHL playoffs, will rejoin the team he helped to the President’s Cup that year.
Mayhem head coach Leo Thomas was happy to get Ruby, who played last season in France for the Brest Albatros and went 20-6 with a 2.16 goal against average.
“When Rubes and I stated discussing the possibility of coming back to play for us, I knew I had to make sure we got this deal done,” said Thomas in a news release. “Jordan was a great leader and obviously, a huge part of our championship team, and we are thrilled to have him back.”
Ruby has also played in he ECHL, as well as with Huntsville of the SPHL.
The season begins in mid-October.
