Tuesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
Albies' slam lifts Braves in return home
Ozzie Albies belted a grand slam to key a six-run sixth and led Atlanta past the Mets 8-2.
Freddie Freeman got the inning started with a homer. Mike Foltynewics held the Mets without a hit into the fifth, and then suffered from arm tightness.
Holt and a pair of Bears make national freshman team
Veterans alum Gabe Holt of Texas Tech and Mercer's RJ Yeager and Le Bassett continue to add to their young college resumes by being named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association freshman All-Americans.
Holt, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, bats leadoff for the College World Series-bound Red Raiders. He is a first-team selection.
Yeager and Bassett, along with Holt, also made the Collegiate Baseball team earlier this month.
Yeager, a shortstop, is the Southern Conference freshman of the year, ending with a .324 average and six homers.
Bassett led the SoCon with 17 homers, also batting .282.
Savannah takes another one from Macon
Macon scored late, but that was it as Savannah survived three errors to beat the Bacon 2-1.
The Bacon dropped to 4-6, with three of the losses to the Bananas.
Riley King had three hits for Macon, half of its total, and the home team stranded nine runners, also striking out nine times.
John Michael Bertrand gave Macon a quality starting fanning four with a walk in five innings.
Macon visits Florence on Thursday and Gastonia on Friday before giving it another shot at home against Savannah on Saturday.
