Henley hanging around the top of the leaderboard

Russell Henley started the day in good shape, and stayed there.

Henley temporarily shared the lead of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, but never dropped lower than a tie for fourth in the second round and is still in the tie for second, now with Si Woo Kim.

They’re two shots back of two-round leader Justin Thomas.

Henley’s 68 followed a 64, and kept him afloat as the list of contenders grew, with 30 players at 5-under or better.

Nick Dunlap is again bringing up the bottom, following a 7-over with an even second round.

“I struggled a little bit with my swing, just felt a little uncomfortable,” Henley said. “Feel like I was kind of going back and forth with a few different thoughts with the driver.

“But I feel like I hit my lines really well and putted well and had some really good up-and-downs. Short game was good. Yeah, I managed.”

Henley knocked out three birdies before a bogey on the par-4 11, with his first two shots going into a tree outline and then a bunker.

It was another day of avoiding trouble and quality escapes when things weren’t smooth, even if he didn’t feel as good as he did Thursday.

“It's just some days I feel a little bit uncomfortable and antsy, and that was just one of those days,” said Henley, who turned 36 last weekend. “I never feel like I got it, like it's perfect. Maybe for nine holes at a time.

“Every shot's so different. The wind's different. The look of the fairway's different. So some days I just feel a little bit more anxious than other days, I guess I would say.”

Henley is in the next-to-last group Saturday, at 1:50 p.m., with Andrew Novak.
