Maconite Hatcher to visit Macon Touchdown Club
Mount de Sales grad Chris Hatcher is this week’s speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.
The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Admission for non-members is $30.
Georgia Tech assistant and successful former high school coach Jess Simpson is next week’s speaker.
Hatcher is in his 10th season at Samford, and is 58-45 after Saturday’s 12-7 win over The Citadel. He is 179-102 in 24-plus seasons at Valdosta State (76-12), Georgia Southern (18-15), Murray State (27-30), and Samford, where he is the program’s winningest coach.
The Mount de Sales grad led Valdosta State as a player, passing for 11,363 yards and 121 touchdowns, earning the Harlon Hill Trophy – Division II’s Heisman – in 1994.
He returned to VSU as head coach and led the Blazers to the Division II national title.
The Bulldogs are trying for their eighth winning season in nine under Hatcher. Samford has several Central Georgians: QB Jim Coleman of Trinity Christian, CB Kamron Smith of Perry, OL Luke Byrne of Mary Persons, WR Jaylon Barden of Westside, and WR Preston Bird of Veterans.
