Longtime Macon doctor, father of Russell Henley, dies at 85
The number of people who know Russell Henley’s name is greater than those who know much about his father.
But those who know his father are well aware of a tremendous impact he had in Macon and Central Georgia for decades as a doctor of compassion who retired only to start a volunteer clinic for financially challenged patients.
And it’s that group mourning the loss Friday of Chapin Henley, who died at age 85 in Columbus after an illness and residence in an assisted living facility.
Chapin and Sally Henley moved to Columbus from Macon, not long after Russell and wife Teil moved to the city, Teil’s hometown. Soon after, the Henleys moved into a facility.
Chapin Henley, who would have celebrated his 86th birthday on Aug. 12, is survived by Sally, Russell, sons Adam and Matt, and daughter Elizabeth (Hipps).
There is a scholarship fund in his name with the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, established by Russell. As per a 2020 Facebook post by the CFCG: “He really cared about his patients, often treating people who couldn’t pay him. He made house calls. He went on mission trips. And after he retired, he opened a medical clinic for uninsured working people.”
After retiring, Chapin Henley was the impetus for the Macon Volunteer Clinic, which opened in 2003 and remains in operation.
His passing came less than a week after Russell competed in the British Open in Scotland. While his health was in decline in recent weeks ,Henley's father, sources say, did not want him to withdraw from the British Open, where Russell Henley ended up turning in a career performance.
A celebration of life will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, with visitation to follow.
