Around/About Central Georgia

From Mercer Tennis Classic to Wimbledon champ in less than a year

A little more than eight months ago, Taylor Townsend thought things were going pretty good as she stood on a court at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center and took home a plaque – and a check – as the singles winner at the Mercer Tennis Classic.

“I was able to enjoy myself and keep my focus,” she said after beating Panna Udvardy 6-3, 6-4 for the title. “This is so big for me.”

Things got bigger, in short order and in a big way.

Townsend teamed with Katerina Siniakaova of Czech Republic, the fourth seed, to knock off second seed Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) for the Wimbledon women’s doubles title on Saturday.

It’s the first Grand Slam win for Townsend, a lefty from Chicago, who is currently No. 76 in singles and No. 23 in doubles.

Townsend paired up with another Mercer Tennis Classic alum, Beatriz Haddad Maia, to reach the round of 16 in the Australian Open in January. She and L Fernanez made the US Open quarterfinals last August.

Siniakova’s longtime doubles partner? New Wimbledon women’s singles champ Barbora Krejcikova.

It was Siniakova’s call to play with Townsend.

“I’m so glad Katerina slid into my DMs,” Townsend said, in an AP story.

Ironically, Townsend has two runner-up finishes, both in the U.S. Open. In 2022, she and Leylah Fernandez lost to, ironically, Siniakova and Krejcikova. That pair won in Wimbledon in 2018 and 2022.
