Henley opens PGA season in contention
Russell Henley is off to a solid start in the first PGA Tour event of the season, and doing so in Maui.
The Stratford grad is tied for 25th, four back after shooting a 4-under 69 in The Sentry’s first round on Thursday.
Henley, who finished tied for 14th in the FedExCup rankings and 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking last year, racked up six birdies to only three bogeys. A bogey on 17 broke a run of three straight birdies, but he closed with some momentum with a birdie on the 684-yard No. 18, driving 359 yards off the tee and draining a 23-footer for birdie.
He is four back of leader Sahith Teegala, who is 9 under, and tied with nearly a dozen players.
Henley opened last year’s tournament with a 3-under en route to a tie for 30th, with a 12-under 280. It was Henley’s fifth tournament of the 22-23 season.
This year, the restructured PGA Tour season started with the calendar year.
