Around/About Central Georgia

Henley stays on top

Steady play continued for Russell Henley, who shot 4 under to stay in the lead at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

Billy Horschel, 116th in FedExCup rankings,  pulled into second with a five-shot improvement and a nine more are within five shots of Henley.

Top-50 players missing the cut: No. 25 Denny McCarthy, No. 47 Alex Smalley, No. 38 Patrick Rodgers, No. 44 Mackenzie Hughes, and No. 26 Chris Kirk.

Henley’s lone bogey – courtesy of a poor chip - came on the ninth hole, No. 18, but he birdied three of the final five holes. He dropped out of the lead only temporarily.

He was in the middle of the pack in driving distance at 297.2 yards, but first in total shots gained (11), tied for second in scrambling and third in shots gained putting. He drilled a 21-footer for a birdie on 17, and spent the day with more near misses for birdies.

Henley is one of six players to have the first and second-round lead this season on the tour, but only one – Lee Hodges in the 3M Open – went on to win.

Macon holds off Lexington County

Macon’s good start was better than Lexington County’s good finish in an 8-5 win at Luther Williams in the home finale.

Macon, which isn’t playoff bound, finishes the season at Lexington County on Saturday.

John-Reagan Freethy had three hits and two runs and Antonio Brown added two hits, both belting doubles and stealing a base.

The Blowfish scored four in the eighth to make it respectable – Macon led 8-0 after five – but that was it.
