Henley has monster round – and the lead – at Wyndham

          No bogeys?

Second eagle of the long season?

Among the top 10 in a field of 156 in shots gained off the tee, approaches to green, putting, tee to green, driving accuracy, scrambling, and putts per greens in regulation?

That’s the kind of day Russell Henley had in the first round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

It put him in first place with a 62, tying his career best round.

Henley has eight sub-63 rounds since the start of the 2020-21 season, sharing the best total with Patrick Cantlay, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele, one better than Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

He leads Adam Svensson and Byeong Hun An by one.

The field has 19 players among the top 50 in the FedExCup rankings.

It’s a nice rebound from a 7-over two rounds and missed cut at The Open Championship two weeks ago.

Henley will try to avoid a repeat of what happened two years ago, when a three-shot lead entering Sunday blew up amid four bogeys in the last eight holes.

“I think about it a lot,” he told reporters.

Henley shot a 63 in the first round en route to the World Wide Technology Championship win in November. He’s had only six sub-70 first rounds this season, with 13 round of 71 or more.

He tees off Friday at 7:45 a.m. with Hideki Matsuyama (tied for 92nd) and Cam Davis (tied for 35th).
