Help wanted: football coach at Wilkinson County

The worst time to be looking for a football coach?

The first week of practice.

That’s the situation Wilkinson County is in after head coach Keldrick Burke resigned to accept the principal’s position at East Laurens.

The announcement was made by East Laurens on Tuesday.

Burke went 15-36 in five seasons with the Warriors. He resigned temporarily in 2020 only to return.

There is a called board meeting Thursday night for three executive-session personnel discussions: assistant superintendent, high school assistant principal, and head football coach.

It’s scrimmage time

The temperatures are better than usual, and while it’s not football weather, it is.

And the sounds of whistles and pads will start being heard on Friday with a collection of high school scrimmages.

Henley back on the course

Maconite Russell Henley makes his seventh appearance at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday.

And five of those six trips have been pretty decent.

Henley missed the cut in 2018 after shooting 2 under. Other than that, he has three top-10 finishes in his last three tries, going 16 under, 14 under and 13 under.

He tied for 46th in 2016 and tied for 31st in 2019.

Henley, 34th I the FedExCup and Official World Golf Rankings, tees off at 1 p.m. with Hideki Matsuyama and Cam Davis.
