Central Georgians eyeing MLB draft
Will somebody from a Central Georgia high school or college get a call in the next three days during Major League Baseballās draft.
Itās a good bet.
The draft starts Sunday at 7 p.m., resuming at 2 p.m. Monday with rounds 3-10, and Tuesday at 2 p.m. with rounds 11-20.
Houston County outfielder Drew Burress, a Georgia Tech commit, is currently ranked 104th by MLB.com, which would put him going in the first three rounds. Futurestarsseries.com ranks him 162nd, Prospectslive.com at 144, and ESPN at No. 40.
Former Bear and current Georgia Bulldog pitcher Jaden Woods is listed at 58th by Futurestarsseries.com and 203rd by Prospectslive.com, and 236th by MLB.com.
Parkview shortstop Colin Houck, Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg shortstop Tai Peete, North Atlanta shortstop Antonio Anderson, Milton pitcher Luke McNeillie, and Cedartown shortstop Dylan Cupp are among the Georgians expected to go fairly early.
In its extensive tracker compilation, MLB.com also lists Houston Countyās Andrew Dunford, a Mercer commit, as well as Tattnall grad Dawson Brown (Georgia Tech), Westfieldās James Hayes (Georgia commit), Mercerās Carter Sanford, Landon Underhill, Middle Georgia Stateās Logan Lee, and Houston County grad and former Mercer outfielder Treyson Hughes (now at Mississippi) as possible picks by the end of the draft.
Bud Dupree hosting camp Sunday at Crayton Park
Wilkinson County grad and current Atlanta Falcon Bud Dupree is hosting a linebacker and lineman skills and drills camp, in conjunction with the Macon-Bibb Recreation Department.
It runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carolyn Crayton Park, formerly known as Central City Park.
Registration is free, and it is limited to the first 50 applicants between 13-17 years old. Each participant will get a t-shirt and picture opportunity with Dupree.
Dupree, owner if Vibez Brunch, Bar & Grill on Cherry Street in Macon, was recently the grand marshal of Maconās Juneteenth celebration.
Early struggles drop Henley
The momentum from a good second round didnāt quite carry over for Russell Henley at the John Deere Classic.
Despite three bogeys on the first nine holes, Henley stabilized a bit for a 1-under day to sit in a tie for 50th through three rounds.
Brendon Todd has the lead with a 16-under 197.
Two bogeys in the first seven holes put Henley at the bottom of the leaderboard, tied for 67th, until a birdie on the eighth hole lifted him from there.
Up to a tie for 56th. Temporarily, for a bogey a hole later dropped him into a tie for last again.
Until he birdied the next hole, and jumped into a tie for 63rd. Another birdie was followed by six straight pars and then a round-ending birdie on his final hole.
Henley is 6 under, and the highest-ranked player at that point or worse on the leaderboard. Matt Kuchar, No. 51 in FedExCup rankings, is tied for last at a 2-under 211.
Henley is not in the field for the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky.
Bacon blanked at home
A pitchers dual for five innings went awry for Macon, which gave up all seven runs in three late innings for a 7-0 home loss to High Point-Thomasville.
Macon managed just four hits and only three walks, getting struck out 10 times.
The Bacon are at Forest City on Monday and then host the Owls on Tuesday.
