Wimbledon draw loaded with Mercer Tennis Classic alums

When Wimbledon gets going Monday, almost a third of the women’s field has something in common.

          Playing tennis in Macon.

The Mercer Tennis Classic has played host to 41 players in the 128-player women’s field at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

It’s a record for the Mercer tournament, to have so many former competitors in a slam event.

Two-time champ Madison Brengle is playing in her 14th Wimbledon.

Jessica Pegula, part of the family that owns the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, is seeded seventh. She’s teaming with Coco Gauff as the doubles second seed. Pegula was part of a doubles title in Macon in 2018.

Beatriz Hadad Maia of Brazil is seeded 13th.

Last year, four quarterfinalists played at Mercer: Tatiana Maria, Amanda Anisimova, Marie Bouzkova, and Ajla Tomljanovic.

Maria reached the semis, and lost in three sets to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur, who needed three sets to get past Bouzkova.

Maia beat Jabeur in the French Open quarterfinals, and then lost 6-2, 7-6 to Iga Swiatek in the semis, Swiatek then topping Karolina Muchova in the finals.

The French doubles semifinals included four MTC alums: Nicole Melichar, Ellen Perez, Taylor Townsend, and Pegula.

Townsend and teammate Leylah Fernandez knocked off Gauff-Pegula 6-0, 6-4 in a quarter, then lost a three-setter in the final. Melichar-Perez fell in three sets in a semi to Hsieh Su-wei and Wang Xinyu.
