Main draw action set for Mercer Tennis Classic
Seeds in the qualifying draw had another decent day at the Mercer Tennis Classic at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
Two seeds lost to lower seeds as the qualifying round finished and set up the main 32-player draw, action starting on Wednesday with eyes set on the top prize in the $80,000 tournament.
Main draw third seed Katie Volynets topped Anna Rogers 7-6, 6-3 in the tournament’s first night match of the week.
Second-seeded Kayla Day, who won the tournament in 2016, will among the first to go on Wednesday, facing Sophie Chang. Tournament top seed Taylor Townsend, ranked 77th in singles, takes on Victoria Hu in an early-afternoon battle of Americans.
Rasheeda McAdoo, who played at Georgia Tech and was a doubles partner with Coco Gauff, had the tallest fan on hand cheering her on. She is the daughter of NBA legend Bob McAdoo, a member of the Pro Basketball, College Basketball, and North Carolina halls of fame.
The 6-foot-9 father will get to watch her keep playing, after she beat fourth-seed qualifier Whitney Osuigwe 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. She next gets fourth-seed Panna Udvardy in the main draw.
But her doubles week is done after she and teammate Marin Partaud lost in straight sets to Akasha Urhobo and Mia Yamakita.
Georgia’s Alexandria Vecic battled back to beat Chelsea Fontenel 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to make the main draw, where she’ll face seventh-seeded Julia Riera.
Doubles action got going, with the third-seed duo of Makenna Jones and Yuliia Starodubsteva getting up set in the first round.
