First day of the Mercer Tennis Classic goes to seeds
The seeds lived up to the, well, seeds in early qualifying at the Mercer Tennis Classic on Monday.

Four of the 16 seeded players lost in the qualifying round. Action resumes Tuesday morning at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
Second-seeded Varvara Lepchenko lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Salma Ewing. No. 6 La Karatancheva went out in two to Salma Ewing, No. 13 Melany Solange fell in two to Chelsea Fontenel, and No. 15 Marine Paertaud retired in the second set, down 6-0 after one and 3-1 in the second.
The first night match is Tuesday, with third seed Katie Volynets taking on Allie Kiick, daughter of former Miami Dolphin legend Jim Kiick.
Mercer’s Teodora Ristic was knocked out in a first-round qualifying math, falling to former LSU signee Jenna DeFalco 6-2, 6-3.
Georgia sophomore Alexandria Vecic handled Jaeda Daniel in two sets, and now faces Fontentel. Rasheeda McAdoo, who played at Georgia Tech, advanced in a three-setter over Mia Yamakita.
Tickets are $5 a day and $25 for the week, with a $125 VIP pass that includes access to all events, as well as complimentary food and beverages, and dinner for evening matches.
