Around/about Central Georgia
Houston County, FPD grads fare well in Southeastern Amateur
Wilson Andress and Brent Hamm finished tied for 15th in the Southeastern Amateur at the Country Club of Columbus.
Hamm had a contending first round of 65, two shots better than Andress. Hamm, a Houston County grad at TCU, struggled in the third round to a 3-over 73 while Andress - an FPD grad at Georgia Southern - hit par, putting both at 206.
Hamm transferred to TCU after three seasons at Troy. He competed in four of the Horned Frogs’ 11 tournaments last year.
FPD grad Luke Dasher (Georgia Southern) finished tied for 75th at 10 over.
Georgia Tech’s Andy Mao won the tournament by two strokes.
Dudley opens Southeast Region Tournament with win
Tennessee scored first, but Georgia’s teams from Dudley scored more in a 3-1 win Saturday in the opener of the Little League Southeast Regional in Warner Robins.
Georgia scored all three runs in the third, on two singles, a three-base error, a triple, and groundout.
Three runs were enough for Deandrea Lowther, who whiffed 11 with only three walks and two hits in six innings and 91 pitches.
Georgia faces North Carolina Sunday at 3 p.m.
Saturday’s scores: Florida 13, South Carolina 4; North Carolina 9, West Virginia 4; Sunday’s schedule: 12 p.m., Virginia vs. Florida; 6 p.m., Tennessee vs. West Virginia.
The boys regional tournament starts on August 4.
Savannah hammers Macon
Five runs in the first were plenty for Savannah en route to a 12-0 romp over Macon.
Two Bananas pitchers struck out nine with no walks in the two-hitter.
Macon visits Lexington County on Sunday, is at Savannah on Wednesday and hosts the Bananas on Thursday.
