Bleckley County mourns death of former player
Luke Duffey, who played football at Bleckley County, died Friday morning after a car wreck in Cochran.
The 18-year-old was driving south on Abney Road, northeast of Cochran, and his 2004 Toyota Tacoma veered off the right side, plowed into a mailbox, and then went across a driveway and hit a tree with the driver’s side.
The Georgia State Patrol report stated no reason yet was known as to why Duffey lost control, and the investigation is ongoing.
Duffey played linebacker and tight end during his football career at Bleckley County and was on the varsity roster for three seasons. He graduated in 2021.
Henley misses first cut of the season
Before the turn, it appeared that Russell Henley was going to have a short weekend.
Henley couldn’t counter three bogeys on the front nine and shot a 4-over 75 on Friday to miss the cut at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head.
That broke Henley’s career-best streak of 12 straight made cuts, including last week at the Masters.
Patrick Cantlay finished Friday strong to take the lead into the weekend.
His final round in Augusta carried over a bit to his first round at the Heritage, but stopped.
The 75 is Henley’s second-highest score of the season, matched at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and topped by a third-round 76 last week.
He’s not in the field for next week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The Mexico Open is next, followed by the Wells Fargo in Maryland.
