FPD head girls basketball coach Griffin retiring
How many games John Griffin has left in his coaching career is an unknown, but it’s not many.
FPD announced Monday afternoon that Griffin will retire as the Vikings head girls basketball coach at the end of the season.
FPD is the fifth seed in the GHSA Region 1-A Private tournament this week, and plays at home Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Griffin succeeded Charley Chase in 2015. He returned to FPD for his second stint, after serving as an assistant from 1996-2002. He headed the GMC girls program from 2003-12, going to the playoffs five times in his second time with the Bulldogs. He was at John Hancock for two years before going ot GMC in 1985-87.
He has coached football and track as well as basketball at FPD, and track.
In a meeting with the Girls’ basketball players and coaches, Griffin cited his love for the girls and the joy of competition,” FPD athletics director Greg Moore said in a release. “Coach Griffin will be completing his 43rdyear of coaching, 16 of which he served at FPD. For the last 8 years, Griffin has been the Lady Vikings Head Coach.
“John has been a hard-working, faithful servant to our Girls basketball program. I’m extremely happy for him as he transitions to a new direction in his life, as he has been a dear friend and colleague for many years. So many young ladies have been affected by John’s servant heart, and I know they all join us in wishing him all of God’s richest blessings.”
