Longtime HS coach Pilcher dies
Ed Pilcher, who won five state titles as head coach at Thomas County Central and is among the top 30 winningest coaches in Georgia history, died Thursday at the age of 72.
Pilcher coached at Thomas County Central from 1991-2007 and had one losing season. The Yellow Jackets won state titles in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997, and reached the finals in 2002 under Pilcher. He left after going 13-1 in 2007 for Bainbridge (5 seasons,30-23) and then Berrien (3 seasons, 9-22). He started his head coaching career at Early County (5 seasons, 42-17-1).
The Florida native led TCC to a 15-0 season in 1997, featuring future Georgia Tech star running back Joe Burns. He resigned from Berrien in 2016 for health reasons – ostensibly kidney related - saying he might return to coaching as an assistant or middle-school coach. The latter happened in 2017 as an assistant at Berrien’s middle school, and he returned to Berrien as offensive coordinator in 2019.
Services are Monday at Thomasville First Baptist Church, with a celebration at the church afterward. Viewing is Sunday at Allen & Allen Funeral Service in Thomasville.
