Westfield 5, Tattnall 4, 8 inn.

          Riley Nelson was put on second in the bottom of the eighth for Westfield, and she went to third on Emmy Dehem’s sacrifice bunt. Sadie Knight came up with the game-winner when she flew out to right, allowing Nelson to come in and keep the defending champs undefeated. Nelson, Kate Hardy, Kendall Fowler, and Cate Raines each had two hits for the Hornets. Sydney Langdon went the distance, striking out 16 and walking eight, to get the win. Gradie Appling had two of Tattnall’s three hits and scored twice. Lindsey Paul went all the way in the loss, with two strikeouts and three walks.

Westfield took a 3-1 lead after one, but Tattnall bowed up to tie it with two in the third. They traded runs later, and let chances to end it in regulation slip away. Tattnall loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but Westfield escaped with a strikeout and groundout. Westfield opened the bottom half with a double, but the Trojans got a fly out and strikeout after a sac bunt to survive.

Next: Tattnall vs. Strong Rock, Saturday, 10 a.m.; Westfield vs. Tattnall/SR winner, Saturday, 2 p.m., championship.

 

Class AA

Piedmont 8, Briarwood 0; Piedmont vs. Briarwood, Saturday, 12 p.m., championship

          Piedmont led 1-0 after one, and added three a few innings later, sealing it with four in the sixth. Emily Whitwell threw a six-inning two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks. The 22-2 Cougars have won 14 straight. Their last loss? To Briarwood, 3-0 on Sept. 1. Piedmont has outscored its last four opponents 32-2. Briarwood is 17-7, with two losses to Piedmont.
