Top seed rolls in Mercer Tennis Classic
Madison Brengle has been ranked in the top 40 in the world in women’s tennis, and showed why in her first action at the Mercer Tennis Classic.
She rolled past Christian Rosca 6-4, 6-0 in her first-round match Tuesday at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
The defending champ is currently ranked 49th, the highest-ranked competitor in the 10-year history of the tournament. Her top ranking is 35th.
Mercer’s Teodora Ristic became the first Bear to win in the tournament on Monday, but lost 6-2,7-5 to Ariana Arsenault in Tuesday’s qualifying action.
Ristic and Mercer teammate Mary Courville lost 6-2, 6-3 to Riya Bhatia and Dia Evtimova in doubles play. The Mercer duo of Camilla Ciaccia and Eden Schlagenhauf lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Michelin Aubuchon and Mary Lewis 6-4, 3-6,10-3.
Action resumes Wednesday morning.
