A Mercer win at the Mercer Tennis Classic
A Mercer player has advanced at the Mercer Tennis Classic.
It’s a first.
Teodora Ristic made history as the first Bear to advance in the 10 years of the tournament, winning a tiebreaker to beat Tori Kinard, seeded seventh in the qualifying round.
The two tied at 6-4, 2-6, and went to a tiebreaker format instead of a third set, and Ristic cruised to a 10-1 romp to advance.
“My thought going into the match was to keep the ball in play and stay consistent,” Ristic said. “Hit heavy balls and try to stay out there a long time.”
Ristic is a grad student from Serbia in her first year at Mercer. She’ll play Tuesday, as well as start doubles play with Bear Mary Weston Courville. Mercer’s Camilla Ciaccia and Eden Schlagenhauf are also in doubles play.
Teammate Naya Tillet was also in action in the qualifying round, and battled N.C. State grad student Alana Smith but lost 6-3, 6-4.
The main singles draw pairings will be made after Tuesday’s qualifying matches.
Of the seeded qualifying-round players, No. 8 Carol Young Suh Lee and No. 14 Liga Dekmeijere joined Kinard as failing to advance.
