Around/About Central Georgia

Henley improves in crowded John Deere field

Russell Henley pulled off a bogey-free round for a 67 in the second round of the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.

Henley is four shots back of leader Luke List, and among six players tied for 12th. He has one bogey in 36 holes, and his two-round 133 is his second-best two-round figure this season.

The field doesn’t include several upper-level players, like Harris English, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, and Bryson DeChambeau, among others, and features only two tournament winners in the past 10 PGA/USGA events.

Henley is 44th in the FedEx Cup rankings, and 12th among FedEx players in the tournament.

He tees off at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, with Hank Lebioda and Greg Chalmers.

Rerun: Savannah hammers Macon

A nine-run surge over three innings lifted Savannah to its latest thumping of Macon, 11-1 at Luther Williams Field.

The Bacon were held to two hits, half of what they had in Thursday’s 9-0 loss to the Bananas.

Bill Knight (Mercer) had two hits and three runs for Savannah.

Macon begins a three-game road trip on Saturday at Lexington County, followed by visits to Spartanburg and Florence before hosting Savannah on Thursday.
