Late start, late finish works for Mercer baseball

Mercer started great, and Wofford ended pretty good, but the Bears’ three runs in the bottom of the eighth were the difference in a 6-4 win in a game that lasted within a few minutes of midnight.

Mercer improved to 12-9 and 2-1 with its seventh straight win, and Wofford fell to 13-8 and 0-1. They’ll play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

Collin Price’s 10-game hitting streak came to an ended but Bill Knight went 3 for 3 atop the lineup and starting pitcher Garett Delano had two hits – including a homer - and three RBI. Delano went 7.1 innings for the win, Luke Sutko getting his third save.

Delano helped Mercer to a 3-0 first-inning lead with a two-run homer. The Bears added on in the fifth, and then the action started a few innings later.

Wofford got a pair of runs on groundouts in the eighth to pull within 3-2. The Bears answered the rally with three runs in the bottom half, Colby Thomas bringing in two of the inning’s three runs with a double.

Wofford wasn’t done, scoring two in the top of the ninth, taking advantage of an error and scoring both with two outs, and stranding the bases loaded when Sutko finished it with a strikeout.
