Perry, West Laurens, Lamar County among top Central Georgia teams qualifying for GHSA state wrestling

          Wrestlers around the state have less time to get past their region/area tournaments and get ready for the GHSA state traditional tournament.

          It starts Tuesday morning at the Macon Coliseum. The finals start Saturday morning.

          Wrestlers from nearly 30 Central Georgia teams qualified in their region/area tournament over the weekend.

          West Laurens and Lamar County won their respect team titles. Perry, Veterans, Putnam County, Jasper County/Monticello, Lamar County, and East Laurens all qualified a chunk of wrestlers, 14 from Perry to eight from East Laurens.

          The last traditional team state champ from Central Georgia is West Laurens in 2007.

          West Laurens' Chase Horne, headed to N.C. State, is the lone returning state champ among Central Georgians, winning at Class 4A 220 last year. He is 44-0 and competing at 285. Teammate Greyson Clark finished third last year, helping the Raiders to a third-place finish, one spot up on Perry.

          Central's Adam Lamar, Mount de Sales' Elijah Batchelor, and Stratford's Hunter Hogan finished in the top four in their respective classes last year.

          The Central Georgia girls qualifiers will be posted Sunday afternoon.

          This year, the top three wrestlers in each weight class qualify, a major change because of the COVID pandemic. Still, Central Georgia's main wrestling powers still have a solid number of qualifiers.

          Because of the possibility of wrestlers being unable to compete because of COVID possibilities, The Sports Report is listing the top four finishers for Central Georgia teams, since there is a chance some may get the chance to compete.
