Landynn Powers didn’t qualify for last year’s GHSA state traditional wrestling championships, but that didn’t affect him much in 2021.

Still, the Dodge County junior came up short late Wednesday night in the Class AA final at 285 at the Macon Coliseum.

Powers lost 6-2 to Jaylin Burns of Vidalia, who opened the action Tuesday with a 32-4 record.

Burns took a 2-0 lead in the second period with a reversal, and Powers got a point back less than 20 seconds later with an escape. A takedown put Burns up 4-1, and Powers got back within 4-2 early in the third period.

But another takedown in the final seconds sealed it for Burns.

Powers had a first-round bye, then pinned East Laurens’ Kaleb Cannon in less than half a minute. He edged Chris Ridling of Model 9-8, and took down Richard Hyatt of Haralson County in 3:06 to reach the final.

Burns, who entered the tournament 32-4, also had a first-round bye, and won by falls in 1:32, 31 seconds, and 1:32

The night featured all championships in Class AA and A, as well as finishing up the consolation action.

GMC’s Hudson Caldwell took home third place, with three falls in consolation action. He took down Rowen Vandergriff of Social Circle in 1:45 to finish third with a 35-4 record this season.

Fourth-place finishers in Class AA: Northeast’s Jarrdarrious Goolsby at 120, Lamar County’s Levi Banks at 145.

Fourth-place finisher in Class A: Tattnall’s Grady Tisdale at 160.
