Mary Persons’ Wachtel takes another state cross country title
There is always suspense in a state championship event.
Except Friday, when Justin Wachtel got going in the GHSA Class 3A boys cross country meet in Carrollton.
The Class 4A boys champ of 2019 added the Class 3A championship to his busting-at-the-seams resume, breaking 16 minutes.
Wachtel topped Andrew Jones of North Hall by 20 seconds. Hall won 3A last year in 16:18.62.
Wachtel won Class 4A last year with a 16:05.50, beating Luke Gaddis of Chestatee by 36 seconds. Gaddis again finished second, this time 18 seconds behind Davis Potts of North Oconee.
As a sophomore, Wachtel was second in 4A in 2018, running 16:18.59 and getting nipped by Marist’s Leif Andersen’s 16:17.75.
