Raiders-Golden Hawks highlight Thursday night

There are no weather issues, but there is still a Thursday night football schedule.

GMC host Wilkinson County in a Region 5-A/Public game, and ACE welcomes Crawford County in 7-A/Public action.

And as will pretty much be the case every week, there’s a nifty Region 3-AA tussle, this time with Washington County visiting Northeast at Henderson Stadium.

Washington County is 1-0 in region play and 3-2 overall, with more game experience than Northeast, Bibb County schools getting a later start.

The Raiders are 2-1 overall, and are part of a tight region, with five teams chasing favorites Bleckley County and Washington County.

The Golden Hawks have by far the strongest tradition of region teams, and are off a quality 31-6 win over Lamar County.

Washington County leads the series 10-3, but the Raiders pulled off a 26-13 upset last year in Sandersville over the No. 9/10 hosts. Northeast also won the first two meetings, way back in 1976 and 1977. In the 10 Golden Hawk wins since then – seven times in this century – only two margins of victory have been by less than 28 points.

Junior quarterback Travion Solomon has completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 414 yards in three games for Northeast, 141 yards worth on 15 tries to Demarcus Griffin.

The Raiders face Southwest next week, the Golden Hawks having the week off before hosting Southwest.
