Honor Roll

          Stratford alum John Mitchell is having a week.

          Mitchell was named USA South player of the week on Monday after big week batting .542 with a home run, 10 RBIs, nine runs scored, and five steals in a 4-1 week.

          He's on an 11-game hitting streak, and owns a .475 average for April, helping the Scots qualify for the conference tournament.

          Among his 11 multi-hit games this season is a team-best three four-hit games.

          And then a few days later, he was named to the All-USA South all-conference second team with a career season.

          He's hitting .341 with three homers, 42 RBI and 21 steals, ranking fifth in the conference in RBI and tying for first in steals. He is currently tied for fourth in program history in RBI and tied for second in steals. ...

          Three Mercer women's golfers have resume updating to do after the Southern Conference announced honorss.

          Rutland grad Carol Pyon made the all-freshman team, while Mary Janiga and Terese Romeo made the 10-woman all-conference team.

          Pyon averaged 76.16 strokes and won the weather-shortened Brickyard CLassic. Janiga is a repeat performer, and Romeo averaged 73.36.

          Two Mercer men took all-conference honors, Stanton Schorr for the second straight year and Martin Plukka to the all-freshman team. ...

          Mackensie Poynter of GMC is the GCAA pitcher of the week.

          She went 2-0 with nine strikeouts and no walks in 14 innings, allowing two earned runs. ...

          Mercer's Kenlie Harvey is the Southern Conference softball player of the week.

          She went 3 for 5 at the plate in a split with Samford, including a two-run homer. Harvey is seventh in the conference with a .471 OBP and eighth with a .640 slugging percentage. ...

          Middle Georgia State's women's tennis team is up to No. 7 in the latest NAIA coach's poll. The men check in at No. 4. ...

 

This Week's Signings

          A trio of Tattnall athletes signed Monday: Jamil Stanley (men's basketball) with Benedict, BJ Spears (baseball) with Gordon State College, and Breonna Glover (women's basketball) with LaGrange. ...

          CGTC's women signed Juanisha Black of Bryan County and the Fitzgerald duo of Hayleigh Ross and Sakendra Paulk of Fitzgerald for basketball for the 2019-20 season. ...

          Jones County's Colby Gordon signed Tuesday with Georgia Southwestern for baseball.

 

Last week's signings

          Perry's signing day ceremony Thursday was a full one, covering a dozen students in seven sports.

          Football: Brandon Wade, a safety who had 91 tackles and six TFLs, is headed to Kentucky State. Curvieon Ezell, a defensive end who had 23 tackles and three TFLs and carries a 3.2 GPA, signed with Highlands Community College in Kansas.

          He'll be joined by teammate and defensive end Jaden Holmes, who had 38 tackles and four TFLs. Linebacker Jaylen Johnson, who had 92 tackles in 2018 with four sacks and returned a fumble 88 yards for a TD, signed with Kentucky State of the SIAC.

          Back/receiver Jonathon Williams, who had 669 all-purpose yards and six TDs, heads down the road to Fort Valley State. He's also a track standout in several events.

          Softball: LT Reynolds played catcher and third and helped the Panthers to the Elite Eight last year, and she signed with Enterprise State Community College in Alabama. She is also part of the Panthers' girls soccer team. Teammate Billie Simmons goes northwest to LaGrange.

          Girls basketball: Asjah Harrell, a four-year starter who cracked the 1,500-point mark and made all-region three times, signed with Cleveland State (Tenn.) Community College.

          Boys basketball: Hayden Fuller has signed with LaGrange.

          Baseball: Jayden Chance will head south to ABAC

          Boys soccer: Mason King, a three-year starter who has een the Panthers' leading score the past two seasons, is bound for GMC.

          Girls track: Charizma Dixon, a sprinter, signed with Thomas University. ...

          Peach County girls basketball standout Da'Nasia Shaw firmed up her commitment and has signed with Jacksonville of the Atlantic Sun Conference. ...

          Tomiyah Alford of Lamar County is headed a little north, continuing her basketball career at Morehead State after signing Friday. ...

          GMC Prep's Cade Bass is headed to Belhaven for softball. ...

          Cathleen Nuge of GMC's college softball team is moving on as well, signing with Allen in Columbia, S.C. ...

          A pair of Baldwin basketball players signed Thursday, Justin Webb to Walters State junior college in Tennessee and Javez Lumpkin to Albany Tech. ...

          Warner Robins grad Victoria Brown joins Jada Neal as transfers for 2019-20.

          Brown comes from Central Georgia Tech after averaging 10.7 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.8 rebounds, and is a 3-point threat. Neal, from East Georgia State, is a 6-0 forward who got 9.5 rebounds a game last season.

          FVSU's Camille Saunders earned a spot on the All-SIAC women's track and field first team in the shot put with a season best of 12.8 meters.

          Ashaunti Brown and Amos Corgelas made the second team, Brown in the women's discus and Corgelas in the men's discus. ...

          Georgia College men's tennis players Jannik Kumbier, Robin Moller, and Noah Wallace were named to the Peach Belt All-Academic team, Kumbier for the third time and Moller and Wallace for the first. ...

          Former Houston County standout Tanner Hall is the Southern Conference baseball pitcher of the week.

          The Mercer junior went eight innings with eight strikeouts in a 6-2 win over Western Carolina, giving up just six hits in the longest start by a Mercer pitcher this season.

          He had a 1.37 ERA in SoCon play, a .179 batting average against, and 18 strikeouts in 23 innings. ...

          Bailey Pattison is the Southern Conference softball pitcher of the week.

          She hurled a complete-game three-hitter to beat Chattanooga, her eighth complete game of the season and second straight.

          The Mercer freshman leads the conference with a 3.56 ERA, and is 3-0 in the conference.
