Georgia holds off Georgia Tech behind Hammonds’ 26
The streak continues.
Georgia got a big night from Rayshaun Hammonds and balanced scoring from Anthony Edwards, Donnell Gresham, and Tyree Crump to edge Georgia Tech 82-78 before a capacity crowd at Stegeman.
Tech outshot Georgia 47.5-42.2 from the floor and 42.1-37.5 from 3, but the Bulldogs had a 71-52.2-percent edge at the line.
Georgia survived a five-minute drought, although Tech had a 20-12 lead until the Bulldogs tied it at 22 with 6:17 left in the half. A Tech four-minute dry spell let Georgia take a 26-25 halftime lead.
Tech played catch-up the entire second half.
Mercer at Charlotte to open NCAA Tournament
Mercer and Charlotte last played in men’s soccer awhile ago.
Like, 1978. Charlotte won that one 2-0.
This one’s a little bigger.
The Bears and 49ers will go at it Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament, the 14-6 Bears and the 11-3-4 49ers.
Charlotte is in the tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years, and has reached the College Cup in 1996 and 2011. Mercer faces the C-USA goalkeeper of the year, and two all-conference defenders.
Mercer women visit Georgia
Two teams off surprisingly resounding losses go at it when Georgia hosts Mercer in women’s basketball Thursday night.
Mercer lost 111-56 to Alabama on Sunday while Georgia suffered a thorough 73-40 loss to Georgia Tech in Athens, the first time the Jackets have won at Stegeman.
Mercer is 1-3 and Georgia 2-1. The Bears’ have lost 23 straight to Georgia, the latest a 67-60 loss a year ago. The Bulldogs held off the Bears 68-63 in March of 2018 in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears’ last win was Feb. 13, 1980 in Macon by a 113-74 margin.
Mercer hosts Eastern Kentucky on Sunday before beginning a two-game road swing at Appalachian State and South Carolina State. The Bears are back home on Dec. 7 against Georgia Southern and then they welcome Clemson on Dec. 15.
