Tuesday's Daily News 'n Notes: Mayhem fire Thomas; some GHSA region shakeups; more signings; Honor Rolll/Alumni Update
Tuesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
Newest GHSA regions are out, and life is different for some Central Georgia regions
The appeals process to the GHSA’s reclassification and region assignments of last week led to a number of changes for regions with Central Georgia teams, thanks to some appeals from area teams.
The GHSA again shut the door on many programs, mostly private school, trying to move up to AA.
The area’s only complete look, with the new regions, is in The Latest Coverage.
Mayhem fire team’s second head coach
A 2-10 start in Leo Thomas’s second season as head coach was bad enough to get him fired on Tuesday.
He was promoted from assistant to head coach and director of hockey operations on May 23, 2018, taking over for Kevin Kerr.
Thomas started with the Mayhem in 2016-17 and helped them with the President’s Cup, and became the first African-American head coach in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
Macon went 70-29-13 with him as an assistant, and 29-32-7 as a head coach. The Mayhem lost 5-3 to Birmingham on Saturday in his final game.
Second-year assistant Ryan Michel takes over as interim head coach.
Macon hosts Evansville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
More Central Georgia signings
Georgia Southern has added a second Central Georgian to its softball roster for 2020-21, with the signing of Tattnall’s J.J. Darley. She joins Houston County’s Madi Campbell.
Jones County’s Kaitlyn Brower and Emily Carter have signed to play golf at GMC.
Perry’s Payne Sells is headed for Georgia Southwestern for golf.
