Will an American win the Mercer Tennis Classic?

Of the eight quarterfinal spots, seven are taken by Americans in the Mercer Tennis Classic.

One is Katerina Stewart, who took some time from tennis to serve in the Army. Stewart controlled the pace with groundstrokes and passing shots for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Caroline Dolehide.

“I’m getting a little more comfortable with each match,” Stewart said in a release. “The weather has messed me up a little bit. It’s cool in the morning, but I’m glad it warms up. I’m from Miami, so I’m glad it warms up.”

Thursday was a boost to her pro comeback.

“Patience is key. I’ve been at this level before, so I know what to expect,” she said. “It doesn’t even mean I belong at this level yet, but I know how much I need to work. All I need is time to get back to where I want to be.”

Second seed Whitney Osuigwe topped UCLA’s Elysia Bolton 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
