Saturday’s Peach State results
Georgia Tech 28, Miami 21
Georgia Tech blocked the potential game-winning field goal on the final play of regulation, scored in three plays in overtime, and then came up with the fourth-and-4 stop on Miami’s possession for the stunning road win.
Jordan Mason plowed in from a yard out for the lead in overtime, and then Tech’s defense held, the Canes just short of a first-and-goal.
The Jackets outran the Canes 207-157, had three fewer first downs and a four-minute advantage in time of possession.
Mason went for 141 yards, and Miami missed two field goals and had another one blocked.
18-point underdogs stun home team
Column: No excuses for awful loss
Fort Valley State 37, Morehouse 21
Kickoff was moved up a few hours because of weather, which then interrupted the game in the second half.
For three hours. Didn’t matter, the Wildcats were up 37-21 at the time, and that’s how it finished.
The Wildcats (5-2/3-0) outgained the visitors 284-128 in total offense, neither team managing a passing game in the bad weather. FVSU never trailed, leading 23-6 at halftime.
The Wildcat defense never let Morehouse mount much of a threat on homecoming.
GMC 50, Community Christian 0
The Bulldogs were up 30-0 at halftime, and backups got plenty of time.
Kennesaw State 55, Presbyterian 10
Mercer 34, VMI 27
Mercer lost QB Robert Riddle and LB Will Coneway (Washington County) in the first half, Riddle to a serious leg injury that led to him being taken away in an ambulance and Coneway to one that got him carted off.
The Bears (3-4/2-2) gutted it out and took a 27-6 lead only for the Keydets to march back within a touchdown in the fourth quarter with 10:08 left.
But Tyray Devezin raced 56 yards for a touchdown with 3:01 left and a 14-point lead, albeit against passing whiz Reece Udinski. The Bear defense, though, held up and forced the Keydets to eat up too much clock for a comeback. VMI scored with 56 seconds left, and Mercer recovered the onside kick to break a four-game losing streak.
Devezin ran for 193 yards.
Kaelan Riley, who lost his job to Riddle last year, came in and led the Bears for more than a half as Mercer had to tweak its game plan.
Nevertheless, Mercer outgained VMI494-395 on five more snaps, and the Bears outpassed the better passing team, 268-263 in yards, Mercer completing 22 of 34 and VMI 26 of 46.
The game was stopped for nearly an hour because of the weather.
Udinski now has the record for consecutive passes without an interception, 342. But Mercer’s defense, without four-year stalwart Coneway, kept him from doing serious damage.
Georgia Southern 30, Coastal Carolina 27, 3 OT
Wesley Kennedy went in from three yards out on first and goal to give Georgia Southern the thrilling and soggy triple-OT win at Paulson.
The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first two overtimes.
GSU’s defense bowed up in the first part of the third overtime after Coastal reached the 12, R Byrd and R Johnson III coming up with the stop on third and 8 to force a field goal for a 27-24 Coastal lead.
The Eagles needed just four plays – one a 14-yard gain from J.D. King – to win it.
Georgia 21, Kentucky 0
There was little offense and no scoring for a long, long time, making those who withstood crappy weather a chunk nervous.
The game might’ve been uglier than the weather.
Georgia finally got on the board with 6:20 left in the third quarter, and scored less than five minutes later.
How ugly and confusing?
Kentucky was in the game despite not completing a pass until the fourth quarter.
Kentucky was 2 of 16 throwing for 17 yards.
Georgia? A nice 9-of-12 night, but for an anemic 35 yards. The Bulldogs outgained the Wildcats 270-177 on four more plays.

Smart defends the offense again
Georgia State 28, Army 21
Georgia State did what many bigger and better programs have struggled to do:
Stop Army’s offense. Kind of.
The Panthers were outgained 278-147 on a whopping 29 fewer rushes, but they held their own. They outgained the Black Knights 379-343 on 12 fewer plays, despite having the ball for 16 fewer minutes.
Dan Ellington was 20 of 28 for 232 yards and three scores, without getting sacked.
