Macon Touchdown Club schedule almost set

          Now that its football doubleheader is done, the Macon Touchdown Club is set for its weekly Monday gatherings at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth on Pierce Avenue, beginning this Monday.

          Former Georgia standout Earl Chambers, how head coach at LaGrange, is the first speaker.

          Georgia Southern’s Chad Lunsford is next with legend Bill Curry to follow on Sept. 24.

          Mercer’s Bobby Lamb opens next month on Oct. 1 with radio host Chuck Oliver and Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson after him. Maconite Chris Hatcher of Samford and former Georgia coach Jim Donnan are on Oct. 22 and 29.

          Ex-Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle is on Nov. 5 and West Georgia head coach David Dean on Nov. 12. Former Maryland head coach and Georgia Tech assistant Ralph Friedgen is Nov. 19 and Army’s Jeff Monken on Nov. 26, the final week.

          Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is penciled in as the jamboree speaker in February.

          Windsor and Central Fellowship are the first high schools to be represented on Monday.

          Chambers is a former all-stater at Banneker who helped Georgia to a 33-11 record in 11 years, and he was very involved in non-sports extracurricular activities.

          He coached at Georgia for five years as a grad assistant, then was a full-time assistant at Valdosta State for eight seasons in different roles, including co-defensive coordinator. The Blazers went 71-22 with him on the staff.

          Chambers was running backs coach at FCS James Madison for a year before going to LaGrange as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for four years before the promotion.

          The Panthers have a slew of Central Georgians on the roster: Caleb Spier and Alex Rivera from Mary Persons, Shamar Slappy and Andrew Butler of Bleckley County, Jamal Shakir of Warner Robins, Austin Sapp of Taylor County, Nick Searcy of Peach County, Arlie Weber and Jesse Weber of Northside, Thomas Kenton of Fullington, Simeon Tanner of Houston County, River Vaughn of Jones County, and Peyton Brinson of East Laurens.

          Cost for non-members is $30.

 

Honor Roll

          Georgia College's Brennan Silliman is the Peach Belt cross country runner of the week after taking third at the VSU Border Clash in Valdosta. ...

          Georgia College's Taylor Svehla earned a spot on the Queens Fall Classic all-tournament team over the weekend.

          Svehla helped the Bobcat volleyball team go 2-2 with 65 kills, topped by 27 against Barton. She also had 13 blocks. ...

          Mitchell Fineran wasted no time in impacting the Samford football team.

          The freshman from Peach County is the Southern Conference special teams player of the week.

          In his college debut, Fineran was perfect on six PAT tries and drilled a 32-yard field goal in the 66-9 win over Shorter.

          He had two touchbacks and averaged 60.1 yards on eight kickoffs. ...

          Middle Georgia State's Ronja Andersson is the Southern States Conference soccer defensive player of the week.

          The freshman keeper from Norway helped the Knights go 2-0-1 with 26 saves in a full 290 minutes in goal, with wins over Truett-McConnell and Point, and a tie with Thomas.

          The Bulldogs expectedly fell from the latest NJCAA national rankings after losing to Arizona Western last week.

          GMC did get some votes, the only 0-2 team to do so.

          The team up next on the schedule got plenty of votes. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M is No. 4.
