Cardiac arrest led to Thomas’ death

A head injury led to cardiac arrest and then the death of Pike County junior Dylan Thomas, according to a report released by the Pike County coroner.

As expected, the death was ruled an accident. "Traumatic brain injury due to or as a consequence of a closed head injuryā€ caused the arrest.

Because of the documentation taken at hospitals, no official autopsy was conducted.

Coroner Terrell Moody said in the statement that Thomas’ parents declined to make a statement and were in agreement with the findings.

Thomas became unstable in the third quarter of the Sept. 28 game against Peach County and was helped to the sidelines, telling trainers he had lost some feeling in his left leg, the statement said.

The coroner said Thomas’ condition digressed about seven minutes after reaching the sideline, and he lost consciousness.

He was taken to a regional hospital and then airlifted to Grady in Atlanta and admitted just before 11 p.m. Thomas was pronounced dead at 7:41 p.m. on Sept. 30, after about 40 hours of procedures

According to the statement, ā€œThere were no pre-existing medical conditions found in his routine physicals nor during his extensive medical treatment at Grady that would indicate Dylan would be more or less susceptible to this injury than any other ballplayer.

ā€œMedical staff at Grady described to Dylan’s parents the nature of the injury as an anomaly, requiring the perfect amount of pressure on the perfect spot at the perfect angle.ā€

No ā€œinvestigatingā€ party, including the GHSA, found any negligence, and it’s still undetermined when Thomas may have suffered the hit that began the fatal process.
