Russell Henley tried gain ground and could, but the field cooperated.

After getting within four strokes of the lead on No. 12, the third round slipped away a bit from the former Stratford and Georgia standout and he finished the third round of the US Open with a 7-over 77.

Two above-par rounds after that quality first round should have pushed Henley out of contention, but he’s not, in a tournament where the best score is 3 over.

Daniel Berger, Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, and Dustin Johnson are all tied for first, all 3 over for the tournament.

Henley is 9 over, and thus only six strokes back of the lead.

Of course, 29 players are within six strokes of the lead.

          How funky are things going?

Henley has more bogeys than than birdies (10-8), and is still in contention despite four double bogeys, including two on No. 3, the first which got him on a downward slide on Friday.

The day got off to a nice start with a birdie, but Henley followed that with two straight bogeys, matching that a few holes later to shoot 3-over 38 on the front nine.

He came out of the turn with three pars and a birdie, but couldn’t sustain that, double-bogeying 14 and 15, and ending the round with a bogey for a nine-over round.

Henley tees off Sunday at 12:01 p.m. with Tommy Fleetwood.
