Henley in the hunt in Florida

The score was nice.

The golf was better.

Russell Henley racked up six birdies, including an impressive trifecta on the final three holes, to rise up the leaderboard and heads into the final round tied for third.

Henley confidence has grown

Henley plodded along amid a huge traffic jam among the top 20 or so, picking up a little here and there.

Then he aced the Bear Trap, the final three holes that have derailed many a player, Henley becoming the only player of the day to birdie all three after parring them in the first two rounds.

He nailed a 13-footer on 16, buried a 35-footer for birdie on par 3 17, and went from 37 yards to four feet for birdie on 18.

“I hit it amazing,” Henley said. “Hit it great off the tee, got the ball in the fairway a lot, which is key around here. Key any week on Tour, but definitely around here.

“Just hit a lot of really quality iron shots. It was pretty stress-free, and played the difficult holes pretty well, too.”

He’s sixth through three rounds in shots gained around the green and tied for third in shots gained total, but doesn’t rank too high in most other stats. Conversely, he’s in the top 30 in 10 of 13 categories listed by PGATour.com.

“A couple par saves early on 5 and 6 that were really big to keep the momentum going,” Henley said. “(I) just felt really comfortable with how I was hitting it.”

Sunday’s weather is expected to be somewhat disruptive, but things have been smooth for Henley.

“It's firming up,” he said. “It's getting a little bit baked out on the greens. Some of the spots in the fairways are getting a little firmer. Pretty typical of what you see here when you don't get rain.”
