He grew up about half an hour from Bowling Green, played at Ohio State and has coached in Indiana and Ohio before moving to Lenoir-Rhyne, where he succeeded Drew Cronic before succeeding Cronic at Mercer.

Cronic completed his first year as Navy’s offensive coordinator in 2024.

Mercer defensive coordinator Jahmal Brown started his coaching career at Bowling Green, and has coached at Youngstown State and with Jacobs at Notre Dame College in Ohio and Lenoir-Rhyne.

Henley has brief lapse, still finishes strong

There was Russell Henley, cruising along in a tie for first or second for a good stretch.

Back to back bogeys later, Henley was merely looking for a nice finish, which he got.

Despite dropping from contention, Henley finished tied for sixth at the Cognizant Classic in Florida with a solid 15-under-par weekend.

His 269 left him four shots behind Joe Highsmith, who surged to the top of the leaderboard with consecutive 64s after a second-round 72.

A rough Sunday dropped Jake Knapp from the lead into a tie for sixth with Henley and Michael Kim.

Henley took home $310,500 for his effort.

He was rolling early, with three birdies in his first seven holes.

A sweet birdie – with a sweet read and hook – on No. 7 put Henley back into a tie for first, catching Knapp at 17 under. He shared the lead at times on Saturday as well.

He dropped from a tie after an approach on 8 that left him a 10-footer for par, which lipped off the right side of the hole for bogey, his first of the day.

Henley had three birdies and was 2 under at the turn, and dropped out of first, but was only a shot back until returning to a three-way tie for first at a birdie on 10.

But his chipping got in the way, and he lost ground with bogeys on 11 and 12 to fall three back of Knapp and Highsmith.

Temporarily, because Knapp went from a share of the lead to a tie for sixth – with Henley - with a triple bogey on 11, still three two shots back.

Within a few holes, it became Highsmith’s tournament to lose, and he birdied four holes on the back nine to seal it, beating Jacob Bridgeman and J.J. Spaun by two shots.

Henley, who greeted his family after finishing on 18, will stay in Florida for the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. After finishing tied for 41st at last year’s Cognizant, Henley tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer.
