Henley finishes with strong final round
There were no lingering effects on Sunday for Russell Henley from a round-bruising triple bogey on Saturday.
The Maconite finished The Players Championship tied for 30th, thanks to a 3-under final round on Sunday.
He headed to the clubhouse a little after 1 p.m. tied for 29th, a jump of 17 spots. Play was suspended about 10 minutes later, thanks to the weather front that rolled through Georgia early Sunday morning.
Of the 20 players who finished by that point, Henley was one of 10 with a below-par round. By the end of the day, only 23 of the 72 players had red scores for Sunday.
Xander Schauffele was 11-over for awhile, with Rickie Fowler 10 over, and many others 6 over or worse. They finished the day 13 and 12 over.
Henley finished nine shots back of co-leaders Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun, set for a Monday morning playoff.
Henley started on No. 10, and swapped two bogeys and two birdies on the first nine, and added three birdies on the back nine.
He’ll be happy to not see No. 14 for a year, following Saturday’s triple bogey with another bogey on Sunday, missing a 10-foot par try, which he repeated four holes later on No. 18.
Everything clicked pretty well on the second nine.
Henley is off for the next three weeks before returning to action in the Masters.
