Triple bogey drops Henley from contention
Russell Henley was moseying along, amid a decent round through 13 holes.
Then came No. 14, the third-ranked hole at TPC Sawgrass that Henley had parred twice.
Went from parred to tarred.
Henley went from bunker to water en route to a double bogey that dropped him to an over-par round and out of even remote contention.
Henley heads to the final round of The Players Championship tied for 46th, losing no ground on the leaders with an even 216 after three round, a dozen shots back of leader J.J. Spaun.
The Stratford grad was one of more than 40 golfers with an over-par outing on Saturday.
Tee times have been pushed up for Sunday because of impending weather, and Henley gets started at 8:33 a.m. on No. 10 with Joel Dahmen and Austin Eckroat.
Henley’s tee shot on 14 went into a bunker on the left, and he went straight into a creek, taking a penalty before heading back into sand.
His fifth shot went only 45 yards, to the end of the green, and he putted from 81 feet to three for the bogey.
But it didn’t exacerbate anything, Henley with a birdie on the next hole and finishing with three pars.
