Kansas City: Steven Nelson, Northside
The 2011 Northside grad surprisingly retired from Houston in June, though he said he would stay in shape in case the right opportunity presented itself. He was still a starting-caliber back, and frisky, taking social media shots at head coach Demico Ryans and GM Nick Caserio along the way.
He was signed to the KC practice squad in December, but hasn’t played since the second round of the 2023 playoffs, a 34-10 loss to Baltimore when he was with Houston. He played in 17 games in 2023.
Nelson started his NFL career in 2015 with Kansas City, spent two years at Pittsburgh and one at Philadelphia before moving to Houston in 2022.
He has played in 130 games, and has 78 passes defended and 13 interceptions.
Nelson graduated from Northside after transferring from Houston County. He spent two years at the College of the Sequoias for two years and then went to Oregon State after committing to Georgia.
He played in the Senior Bowl and attendd the combine before being picked in the third rond in 2015.
Kansas City: Malik Herring, Mary Persons
Herring has played in only six games this season, his fourth in the NFL after entering as an undrafted free agent from Georgia.
He had two solos and two assists in the 38-0 loss to Denver to end the regular season, his first action since the ninth game, a 30-24 win over Tampa Bay.
The 24-year-old who has remained active in his hometown of Forsyth didn’t play in his first season, 2021, and has been in 23 games in three seasons, with 23 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
