Charges filed against killer of former FVSU basketball coach

Identified last week as a person of interest, Iquane Brown has now been charged with the murder of former Fort Valley State men’s basketball coach Sammy Jackson.

Jackson, 60, was found dead on Jan. 29, two days after he was reported missing in Warner Robins, where he was a part-time Uber driver. His car was located in Bonaire, but he was found in Atlanta, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.

Obituary

Brown is charged with murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, hijacking of a motor vehicle, kidnapping, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The 30-year-old is being held at the Houston County jail on other charges: armed robbery, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and multiple firearm-related offenses.

          No bond has been set.

Jackson was the Wildcats’ head coach from 2011-18, resigning for family issues.

Jackson had also coached at Alabama A&M, Alabama, Savannah State, Georgia Southern, and Tennessee State. He was a standout high school player near Dothan, Ala., and played at the University of Montevallo in the 1980s.

The father of three was an employee of the Bibb County School District, according to some social media posts, as a teacher and coach at Howard Middle School.

Jackson’s family will host a visitation on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Harvest Church in Byron. Another visitation will be Friday at the Wright Funeral Home in Headland, Ala.,  from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The funeral service is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Steve Williams Arena in Headland, just north of Dothan.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, February, 8 at Steve Williams Arena in Headland at 12:30 p.m.
