          ACE pulled off an eyebrow-raising upset, handing Central its first region loss since being swept by Sumter County during the 2021-22 season. ACE held Central to one point in the second quarter in taking an 8-6 halftime lead on a rough shooting night for both teams. The Gryphons, who handled the press much of the night, outscored the Chargers – who missed 12 free throws, 17-4 in the fourth quarter. Khloie Stanley led ACE with 14 points. Jikaylee Marshall topped Central with 7. Central, ranked in the top 3 in the state in Class A/Division I, fell to 14-4 and 7-1. ACE improved to 15-2 and 5-2.

          Gatewood’s Matt Allen went off for 37 points, but the Lancers had more balance, led by Shaheem Barboza’s 24 points, with 14 from Judson Walls, and 10 each from Rayden Nelson and Jake Stanage.

          Zion Cordy had 21 points and 5 assists for the Golden Hawks, Brashod Heggs added 13 points and Kaden Collins10.

          Xavier McCoy dropped 5 3-pointers en route to 20 points for the Indians.

          Putnam County dropped to 18-1 after the battle of top 5 Class A teams, Greenforest dominating on the paint. Jmari Greene had 13 points and Tamaud Woodson 12 for the War Eagles.

Parade and pep rally Sunday for Northeast football

          Good weather will likely cooperate on Sunday for a dual celebration in East Macon and Macon.

          The Northeast state runner-up football team as well as Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated on “EastSideOutLoud Unity Day”.

          A parade will start at 2 p.m. at Burdell Hunt Elementary and stays on Maynard Street until ending at the Rosa Jackson Recreation Center.

          A pep rally is set for 3:30 p.m., with events including local vendors and food trucks.

          Booster Marshall Talley and Macon-Bibb County commissioner Stanley Stewart are among those behind planning the festivities.

West Laurens heads area group at GHSA wrestling duals

          West Laurens is off to a good start at the GHSA state wrestling duals that began Friday throughout the state.

          Central Georgia teams competed at Ola, Troup County, Columbus, and Heard County.

          The GHSA website’s page of brackets indicated that consolation matches would take place on Friday, but as of 2 a.m. Saturday, no scores were posted. The GHSA page with the schedules, though, did not indicate consolation matches would take place on Friday.

          Perry topped Pace 60-21 in the opener but was downed 64-18 by Central-Carrollton. It faces either St. Pi X or Drew in consolation action.

          West Laurens handled Dawson County 42-29, with Luella next.

          Upson-Lee lost 47-26 to Lumpkin County, and then Long County.

          Rutland was thumped 83-0 by Coahulla Creek, with East Jackson next.

          Dublin beat Irwin County 48-31 in round one, with seven falls, then lost 62-15 to Social Circle in a quarterfinal.

          Jasper County was popped 79-0 by Bremen, then had St. Francis next.

          Action resumes Saturday morning.
