Around/About Central Georgia
Henley still in the hunt, but …
Russell Henley went from steady to shaky, and from contender to hopeful during Saturday’s third round of the Sony Open.
Henley enters the final day tied for 11th after shooting 3-under 67, for the second straight day, and trying to hold off assorted surges.
Stephen Jaeger jumped 40 spots into a tie for second, Lucas Glover rising 31 spots into the five-way tie for 11th at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
J. J. Spaun jumped from fifth to sole possession of the lead after a 5-under round.
One of the tour’s more accurate golfers, Henley started having some issues staying on fairways consistently. He was 36th in shots gained off the tee Saturday, and 57th in putting
An eagle on No. 9 looked like it would lift Henley into serious contention, putting him in a tie for second.
But then came the hiccups, with bogeys on 11, 13, and 15, with pars in between. A birdie on 16 lifted him back up into a tie for 16th at 9 under for the weekend, and five back of leader Patrick Fishburn.
Henley ended the day with a little momentum, with another birdie on a par 5, No. 18, after a nice escape from the left bunker.
He tees off Sunday at 2:10 p.m. with Ryan Gerard and Gary Woodland.
