Henley gets warm on the back nine at FedEx St. Jude
After three weeks off, a bogey on the third hole wasn’t too surprising for Russell Henley.
It didn’t seem to bother him.
Henley reeled off six straight pars and added some birdies en route to a 2-under 68 in the first round of the PGA Tour playoff opening tournament, the FedEx St. Jude in Memphis.
The Stratford grad is in a group tied for 18th that includes Billy Horschel, Wyndham Clark, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and Harris English.
Chris Kirk, owner of an ace on No. 14, leads with a 6-under 64.
Henley had a shot at a few eagles, including on that par 5 No. 3 when his 43-footer got within six feet, and then he missed that one for par.
On the par 5 16, his second shot left him only 45 feet away, and is eagle try left him an 11-footer for birdie, and he settled for par.
But he birdied three of four holes to start the back nine. Henley left a few more birdies out there, finishing the day tied for first in greens in regulation and sand saves, tied for second in driving accuracy, and sixth in shots gained off the tee.
Henley tees off Friday at 10:05 a.m., with Tony Finau.
VB-Mercer expected to contend in conference
