Former Mercer head coach Gary lands at Georgia Tech

The indications had been there for several weeks, and became reality on Wednesday with the announcement that Greg Gary had joined the Georgia Tech men’s basketball staff.

Also new to the Yellow Jackets’ staff of second-year head coach Damon Stoudemire is former Tech standout James Forrest.

Gary’s new position is as a quality control specialist/analyst. It appears to be a new position. As per the final game notes package for Georgia Tech at the end of last season, there were four assistant coaches, and a director of player personnel, of scouting, and of operations, plus an assistant with operations.

The current staff list for the Jackets lists five assistants, the same director positions, tor of operations, the QCS/A role, and a special assistant to the head coach.

That final position is where Forrest joins the Jackets. Other than Gary and Forrest, the staff remains the same.

Gary was dismissed in March after five seasons as head coach at Mercer, going 81-79, following a head coach stint at Centenary and assistant coach gigs at McNeese State, Tulane, Miami, South Florida, Duquesne, and Purdue.

Gary remained in Macon after the change, and began posting items connected to Georgia Tech on his Twitter/X and Instagram in mid June.

One former Mercer assistant has landed a basketball job since the change.

Kim Lewis is an assistant at Robert Morris in Pittsburgh. Ryne Smith returned to the Midwest to join the staff of the John Purdue Club, a fund-raising arm at Purdue.

D.J. Byrd returned to Indiana and is looking to stay in basketball. Bobby Kummer and his wife – who works at Mercer’s School of Medicine – are still in Macon.
