Geter retires as Wilkinson County superintendent

For the first time since the 1999, Wilkinson County’s school system won’t have Aaron Geter on the payroll.

Wilkinson County Schools posted on its Facebook page Saturday night pictures of a celebration with Geter.

“As the final days of the 2023-2024 academic year come to a close, it's time to salute our fearless leader, Dr. Aaron Geter.

“Earlier this month, we had a Claws for a Celebration, honoring Dr. Geter's retirement. He's dedicated 27 years of his life to Wilkinson County and over 30 years to the noble cause of public education.”

The post included nearly 50 pictures of a celebration.

The school posted on May 16 the appointment of Dr. Angela S. James as his successor.

A look at board meeting agendas and meetings dating back to March gives no indication as to when Geter announced his retirement, nor did any Facebook posts by the system or Wilkinson County High.

Geter was boys head basketball coach at Wilkinson County from 1998-99 to 2017-18, when he quietly resigned from that position, only a few months after winning the program’s 10th GHSA state championship.

The Warriors won titles in both Class A and AA, and went through a flurry of trophy ceremonies with six from 2011-18.

Geter’s coaching career at Wilkinson County coincided with a long career in administration, as the high school principal and then county superintendent.

With the wins – he went 553-72 overall - came allegations of recruiting players to the county just for basketball, and he was subject to a number of investigations during his administrative career. He was reprimanded by the state’s Professional Standards Commission in 2015.

Geter graduated from Mercer in 1987 after a stellar career that led to his induction into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2013. He is also in the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, part of its first class last March.

Interim head coach Cameron leaving Macon Mayhem

For the first time since 2017, Caleb Cameron won’t be around the Macon Mayhem.

He announced on social media Saturday night that he was leaving the organization after seven years, as a player, front-office employee, and coach.

Cameron took over as interim coach when new Mayhem owner and CEO Chuck Norris announced the firing of Nick Niedert in March, on the same day new ownership of the team was announced.

“I leave you today knowing that there are some amazing and big things on the horizon. This new ownership group has some amazing ideas that I cannot wait for you to see in action.

“Know that I am not far and will always support th is team as much as possible. I will see you in October as the biggest Mayhem fan there is.”

Cameron is the only former Mayhem player to have his number retired, after five season with the team record for number of games played.

The Mayhem finished 15-34-3-4, good for ninth in the 10-team league.
